Uniforms and Flight Gear from the The Kirkup Family Collection

This selection of uniforms from the fabulous collection of the Kirkup family, represents a wide cross-section of the vast number of different uniforms worn by the principal warring nations in the years 1939–1945.

WWII was fought in locations across the globe, sometimes in the most extreme forms of weather, from the freezing temperatures of Russia to the dry heat of North Africa and the sweltering humidity of the tropics. In such conditions the fighting man of WWII needed to be able to function at his best and so a bewildering array of uniforms was developed - both for men and women.

Represented here are uniforms of men and women, combatant and non-combatant, pilot and foot soldier, overseas and on the home front, ally and enemy. This is a rare opportunity to view a collection never before exhibited to the public. Some nations are well represented, others not at all. It has the unique character of a private collection.
